Cavalry Saber

About this artifact

This 18th century sword from New England was used in the American Revolution. It has a cherry grip engraved with the date 1776. This engraving may have been added later, perhaps even during the centennial celebration of American independence in 1876. Designed for slashing as well as stabbing, a saber was intended for use by mounted cavalry. Clumsy and unbalanced, this sword was probably copied from contemporary Eupropean designs, with limited success.
