About this artifact

On October 15, Deerfield voters convened to choose a representative to attend a county convention at the home of Seth Murray in nearby Hatfield on October 25. After four men in turn asked to be excused from this duty, the town voted to send Mr. Simeon Harvey (1743-1819) and to pay the costs of "the delegate who shall attend." The unwillingness of the four initial choices to serve may have reflected their disapproval of the anticipated business of the convention. The delegates discussed grievances against the state government and criticized its handling of the severe economic depression following the American Revolution.
