Map of the Springfield Arsenal, 1801

Date: 1801
About this artifact

This detail copied from a larger map which has been lost, depicts the buildings and layout of the United States Arsenal at Springfield in about 1801. It is the earliest known surviving representation of the Springfield Arsenal, which was established during the American Revolution in 1778. The fragment shows the arrangement of buildings that would have been present at the Arsenal in 1787 when the Massachusetts Regulators tried unsuccessfully to take possession of barracks and stores from the government militia. The Arsenal, later the Springfield Armory, began manufacturing small arms in 1794 and continued production until the United States government closed it in 1968.
