About this artifact

In a tavern, rum and other spirits would be kept in casks in the cellar, and then decanted into bottles to bring upstairs for serving. The bottles would then be kept on shelves behind the bar. This type of bottle would also have been used to hold rum for puyrchase in stores like John Williams' in Deerfield. Rum, sugar and molasses imported from the West Indies were in high demand regionally. They were also important commodities in the transatlantic slave trade with the Caribbean and Africa.
