Chintz Gown

Date: 1775 - 1790
About this artifact

This round gown is made of a glazed printed cotton which was popular for gowns. It would have been available for purchase once the Revolutionary War ended and fabric was once again being imported from Britain. Round gowns became popular during the last quarter of the 18th century. Most gowns in the 18th century had the skirts split down the front, allowing the petticoat to show. Round gowns did not have a split down the front.
