About this artifact

This picture of "the Old Day House" appeared in the Springfield Republican newspaper in 1909. The Day family was among the most prominent families in West Springfield, Massachusetts, and Josiah Day built this substantial house in 1754. It is said that his nephew, Captain Luke Day, made his headquarters here during the series of protests that became known as Shays' Rebellion. In 1903, the last of the surviving "Day Sisters" sold the house to the newly formed Ramapogue Historical Society with the stipulation that it be used as a museum. The house is located beside the old common, where the First Church and schoolhouse stood, and where Captain Luke Day drilled his Regulators in 1786.
