Firing Glass

About this artifact

This glass is known as a "Firing Glass." When men were making toasts, they pounded their glasses on the table as a form of emphasis. The heavy base of this type of glass served two purposes; the glass could withstand the pounding and it made a loud noise. The noise was similar to that of a gunshot, which is the reason for the name.
