Jacob Walker's Gravestone

Date: 1787
About this artifact

Jacob Walker of Whately, Massachusetts, was among the hundreds of local men who responded to the Massachusetts government's call for militia volunteers to put down the unrest the state was calling a rebellion. Walker was among a party of militia when he was shot and killed while pursuing a known Regulator, Jason Parmenter of Bernardston. The slate marker erected to Walker's memory in the Hatfield cemetery lauded his patriotism in "manfully defending the Laws & Liberties of the Commonwealth" when he "NOBLY FELL by the impious hand of Treason & Rebellion."
