About this artifact

During Shays' Rebellion, the Massachusetts militia stationed at the United States Arsenal in Springfield, Massachusetts, fired a howitzer like this at the approaching Regulators. It took a trained team of artillery men to load and fire a howitzer. The howitzer at the Arsenal was loaded with grapeshot and fired directly at the advancing men, killing three immediately, and one who died later that night.
