West Point

About this artifact

The last regiments to be discharged from the Continental Army in 1783 were stationed here at West Point, New York. This print of West Point in 1780 appeared in the New York Magazine for 1790. The print shows the enormous, 450-yard-long iron chain the American army stretched across the Hudson River during the Revolution to prevent British ships from traveling up and down the river. Four long barracks constructed from limestone housed the soldiers stationed there. General Benedict Arnold commanded West Point in 1780 when he attempted to sell this strategic post to the British in one of the most famous betrayals in American military history. West Point is the home of the United States Military Academy, founded in 1802.
