This term initially referred those who favored creating a stronger central government. It later was used to identify those who favored adopting the United States Constitution framed in 1787. By the 1790s, it became the name of a pro-nationalist political faction led by Alexander Hamilton in opposition to the Democratic, or Jeffersonian, Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson.
