The bicameral state Legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The word "court" refers to the role the legislature played in the colonial period, when it heard judicial appeals. Before the adoption of the state constitution in 1780,the Massachusetts Legislature was called The Great and General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
