Regiment

A military unit. Continental Army regiments were composed of 8 companies and at full strength were supposed to total 728 officers and men. The Continental Congress instituted this regimental organization upon the recommendations of General George Washington and his officers in the fall of 1775. The actual strength of regiments fluctuated during the war.
