About this artifact

Jonathan Judd, Jr. was a merchant living in Southampton, Massachusetts, who recorded in his diary the events of January, 1787. Judd reported that one thousand government militia had gathered at the United States arsenal in nearby Springfield by Friday, January 19th. On the following Tuesday, he noted that Regulators in arms against the government intercepted and detained men carrying provisions to Springfield. Judd, whose sympathies lay with the government militia, lamented that the pro-government people could not deliver provisions to the militia at Springfield from either the west or the north because the Regulators held those towns. In the aftermath of the bloody encounter at the Arsenal on January 25, 1787, Judd described the movements of both the Regulators and the Government militia.
